FAQ on natural cosmetics

What makes a cosmetic product a natural cosmetic?

A cosmetic product is considered a natural cosmetic if its formulation consists exclusively of natural, nature-derived and nature-identical substances – such as pigments, minerals and, where absolutely necessary, preservatives. We base our approach on the criteria of the ICADA Natural Cosmetics Standard (www.icada.eu). Our cosmetics are also free from genetically modified substances, mineral oils, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances and artificial preservatives.

Are natural cosmetics the same as organic cosmetics?

No, not necessarily: natural cosmetics refer to products made from natural, near-natural and nature-identical raw materials – this is not automatically synonymous with organic certification. However, a large proportion of the ingredients in our products are also organically certified, for example in accordance with the EU Organic Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2018/848); only a few raw materials are not (yet) certified organic.

Is the term ‘natural cosmetics’ protected by law?

No: unlike ‘organic’ for food and cosmetic raw materials, the term ‘natural cosmetics’ is not protected by law in the EU – so, in theory, any brand can use it, even without independent testing. Reliable guidance is therefore provided by independent standards such as ICADA (www.icada.eu), NATRUE or COSMOS, which have their own sets of criteria and inspection procedures. We base our formulations on the ICADA criteria.

How do your products remain stable without artificial preservatives?

Instead of artificial preservatives, we rely on natural preservation systems as well as formulations and packaging that make bacterial growth difficult from the outset – such as hygienic dispensers. The PAO symbol (indicating ‘months after opening’) on the respective packaging shows you how long an opened product can be used safely.

Are natural cosmetics automatically vegan?

Not necessarily: recognised natural cosmetics standards such as ICADA do not categorically exclude certain animal-derived ingredients – such as beeswax or lanolin. You can tell whether a product is also vegan by looking for the Vegan Society seal or the relevant labelling on the respective product page.
